Hands up for the environment

Sacré Cœur students declared last Wednesday "ECO” day.

Sacré Cœur students declared last Wednesday ‘ECO" day and decorated a canvas with their own green handprints as a symbol of their commitment to caring for the environment.

Dressed as cardboard trees, Year 12 ‘Blue Ribbons', Nimita Origanti, Fiona Steele and Shana Schokman, addressed fellow students on important environmental facts and how making small changes can make a big difference.  Suggestions included turning down the heat to save 10% in the electricity used by each person and wearing warmer clothing instead, switching off power points, turning off lights in unoccupied rooms and holding clothes recycling parties.  The girls underlined their eco message with alarming facts about climate change including the mass migration of fish to cooler waters and the shortened hibernation periods of some animals.

Students were then urged to fill a bucket with unwanted cds, dvds, cd/dvd cases, mobile phones and batteries.  These will be donated to the Melbourne Zoo as part of the Zoo's Public Place Recycling program.

To demonstrate their commitment, the girls encouraged their fellow students to stamp a green handprint onto a canvas painted with a tree.  The hand painting was a fun and symbolic way for the girls end the lunchtime presentation.  Science teacher, Mr John Denmead, went one step forward by placing a green footprint on the canvas.
