An important part of Melbourne's history
Established by the Religious of the Sacred Heart in 1888 Sacré Cœur, Glen Iris has been on the same site ever since.
The first twelve students arrived on August 9th at Brynmawr and shared this accommodation with the nuns until the new building opened in 1905.
Violet Dillon was one of the first pupils, arriving in 1890 the year that the foundation stone was laid for the Chapel wing.
The material in the Archives documents these early beginnings and the continuing history of a school steeped in the traditions of Sacred Heart education.
Virginia Kennedy, the School's archivist, cares for the comprehensive collection of written sources, artefacts and photographs housed within the school. Virginia works closely with our Alumnae Relations Manager and organises displays of archival material relevant to year level reunions.
Virginia, who taught at Sacré Coeur for 29 years, also attends each reunion. "They are special events for me as it is a wonderful opportunity to catch up with the many girls I taught at Sacré Coeur."
Virginia can be contacted by calling the school on 9835 2700 or via email vkennedy@sac.vic.edu.au
